Language Tutor is an AI language tutor by Language App AI, run by 24 Hour Designs LLC, 4750 Lincoln Blvd #133, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292 (“we”). This page says what we keep about you, why, who helps us run it, and how to have it deleted. Questions: contact@languageapp.ai, or Settings → Contact us in the app.
The short version
- Your conversations with your tutor are kept so she can remember you, correct you and plan your next lesson. Delete your account and they go.
- No advertising, no tracking cookies, no selling of anything about you.
- Your words are sent to an AI provider (Anthropic) to write the tutor’s replies.
- Analytics are counted without cookies, and IP addresses are never stored as such. Once you make a tutor, a keyed hash of its key links your use across days — what you did, never what you said.
What we keep, and why
Your tutor and your lessons
A random key in your browser identifies your tutor. With it we keep: what you and your tutor said (the transcript), facts she remembers about you (you can see and forget them in “What she knows”), her private notes and plan for your next lesson, your progress and level, the words you have met, scenarios you made, your settings (your name, the pronouns and level you chose, your languages, your daily goal), and a practice time if you set one. We keep these to run the tutor; they are not used for anything else.
When you “forget” a fact, it leaves what she keeps — but what you said is still in the conversation until you delete your account.
Your account
If you save your progress, we keep your email address and your password (stored only as a one-way hash by our account provider), and the 6-digit codes we email you (stored only as keyed hashes, kept for a short time). Your account lists the tutors you have.
Your age
Before a tutor is made we ask what year you were born, to check that you are old enough. The year itself is not kept: your tutor records only whether you are under 18, so that the adults-only mode stays off and the tutor follows its rules for teenagers. If the year says you are under 13, no tutor is made, and that answer stays only in your browser.
Paying
Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see or store your card. We keep your Stripe customer number, your plan and its dates, the top-ups you bought and a record of each payment (amount, tax, date, and Stripe’s ids for it) for accounting.
Reminders
If you ask for practice reminders, we keep your practice time. A reminder email is sent to your account’s address, read at the moment it is sent and not stored with the reminder. Push reminders keep your device’s push address and keys until you turn them off. A calendar subscription link is random — it is never your tutor’s key.
Analytics and safety
We count visits and how the app is used without cookies: a visitor is a daily-changing, keyed hash of their IP address and browser, so a visitor alone cannot be followed from one day to the next. Once you make a tutor, a keyed hash of its key links your use across days — what you did, never what you said: that is how we see where people get stuck and what helps them keep learning. We keep the country, region, city and time zone our host derives from the connection, the kind of device and browser, where a visit came from (the referring site’s name only, and campaign tags), and what was used (for example: a step of the first run was answered, a lesson message was sent, a scenario was played, Plans was opened). No message, fact, name or email is ever in these records, and none holds free text: every value is from a fixed list or of a fixed shape (like a website’s name). If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, what it does is counted with no hash at all.
To stop abuse we count requests per IP address and per tutor — only as keyed hashes, deleted within 3 days.
Word pages
When the tutor teaches you how to say something, the word and its meaning (as the tutor wrote it — never your message) may become a public page about that word. Each word is counted by how many different learners asked, under a keyed hash that cannot link your asks together or to you. Personal details and names are refused and their asks deleted.
Contact us and the waitlist
Messages you send us (and a bug report’s technical details: the app version, your browser, your two languages, the last error — never your conversation) are kept so we can answer. A waitlist sign-up keeps your email and the languages you asked for. If you join the beta list (offered when every place is taken), we keep your first name, last name and email address to tell you when a place opens, and your browser remembers that you joined; every such email has a link that takes you off the list, and you stay on it until you use that link or delete your account.
On your device
The app keeps your tutor key, your session and your preferences in your browser’s local storage. It sets no tracking cookies. Once you have made a tutor, its key is also what our analytics link your use by (only as a keyed hash, as above). Speech: your browser reads the tutor’s lines aloud with its own voices (some are online voices — Google’s in Chrome, Microsoft’s in Edge — which send the line’s text to that company); when you hold the microphone, your browser’s own speech recognition turns your voice into text — Google’s service in Chrome, Apple’s in Safari, Microsoft’s in Edge — under that provider’s terms. A browser without speech recognition (Firefox, for now) has no microphone here: you type. We receive only the text.
Who helps us run it
- Anthropic — the AI that writes your tutor’s replies, reviews your lessons and writes word pages. It receives the conversation and her notes to do so. Under its commercial terms it does not use this data to train its models.
- Netlify — hosting, the app’s server functions and their storage.
- Supabase — accounts (your email and password hash) and billing records.
- Stripe — payments.
- Resend — the emails we send (codes, reminders, the beta list’s email), and the delivery to our mailbox of the messages you send from Contact us.
- Cloudflare — Turnstile, which checks a browser is a person’s before a new tutor or account is made, or a place on the beta list is asked for.
- Google, Apple, Microsoft — speech recognition in your browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge), as above, if you use the microphone. Google also hosts the mailbox that receives email you send us.
We are based in the United States, and so are most of these providers: your information is processed there. Where European or UK law asks for a safeguard when personal data leaves the EU, the EEA or the UK, we rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (with the UK addendum) in our providers’ data processing terms, or on a provider’s certification under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension.
How long we keep it
Your tutor and account data: until you delete your account. Abuse counters: 3 days. Analytics records: 24 months. Payment records: 7 years, for tax and accounting. Messages you sent us: 24 months, or sooner if you ask us to delete them.
Deleting your account
Options → Account → Delete my account. We email you a code to confirm. Then we delete: every tutor on your account and everything in it (conversations, remembered facts, notes, progress, settings, scenarios, words), your practice times, reminders and calendar link, your place on the beta list, your account, and your customer record at Stripe — any plan stops at once. Stripe keeps its own invoices and charges, with the email address on them, for accounting and tax, as the law requires it to. We keep, for accounting, each payment’s amount, tax and date and Stripe’s ids for it and for your former customer record — nothing else about you — and your email address only as a one-way keyed hash, so that the free extra minutes are not given to the same address twice. Messages you sent us are kept for their 24 months. Analytics records are kept for their 24 months too — they hold keyed hashes, never a message or an address — and a lock stays on each deleted tutor’s key, so that nobody can open it again.
A tutor without an account (never saved) can be deleted in its Settings → Delete (its name), at once; a tutor without an account that is unused for 12 months is deleted automatically.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete what we hold about you, or object to how we use it: contact@languageapp.ai.
If you live in the EU, the EEA or the UK
24 Hour Designs LLC, at the address above, is the controller of your information. The GDPR and the UK GDPR ask us to say why we may use it. We use it to run your tutor and your account, because that is our contract with you; to keep the service secure, stop abuse and understand how it is used (the cookieless analytics above), because we have a legitimate interest in doing so; and to keep payment records, because the law requires it. You can object to the analytics at any time: write to us, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live.
If you live in California, or another US state with a privacy law
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. You can ask to know, correct or delete what we hold, as above, and we will not treat you differently for asking.
Children
Language Tutor is not for children under 13: we ask your year of birth before a tutor is made, and make none for a child under 13. Where the law where you live sets a higher age for agreeing on your own (up to 16 in parts of Europe), you need a parent’s or guardian’s permission. Its bad-language mode is for adults only (18+).
Changes
If we change this page in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before it applies.
